As the first political party to respond to our submission, Sinn Fein are to be commended. However, their response did not sufficiently address the main issues we have raised, nor did they elaborate on their 2005 call for “the liberalisation of licensing laws towards European model involving flexible opening and closing times to prevent drink-related disorder.”

One lobby group believes the time has come for a debate on licensing laws and opening hours, writes Jim Carroll

FOR as long as there have been clubs in Ireland, there have been problems with the laws of the land. It starts out with the fact that there's no such thing on the Irish statute books as a nightclub, and it just goes on from there. If you're operating a nightclub, you need a public dance licence and are then required to apply regularly for special exemption orders. From opening hours to liquor licensing provisions, the whole thing is a rather complicated mess.

WHY GO NOW Five years ago, at the height of Ireland's economic boom, Dublin teetered on the brink of blandness. The city's warm fusty character and weathered shops became harder to find amid the shiny glass-paneled offices and luxury apartments. Instead of moseying to work, people wielded sharp elbows on the overcrowded sidewalks. Caffeinated sobriety replaced that famously hung-over haze.
